Google Business Profile Checklist for Local Businesses

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a local customer sees, before your website. It is the box with your name, phone number, hours and reviews that shows up on the map and in the search results. A complete, accurate profile gets you found and called. An old or half-filled one sends customers to the next business on the list.

Use this checklist once, then check back every month. It takes about an hour.

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business name on Google. If you see a profile with a “Claim this business” option, claim it and finish verification. Until you do, you cannot control what it says.

2. Make your name, address and phone number exact

  • Use your real business name, the same way it appears on your sign, invoice and website. Do not add keywords.
  • Use the same address and phone number everywhere: your website, Facebook and any directory.
  • If you serve customers at their location and do not have a storefront, hide your address and list your service area instead.

3. Pick the right categories

Choose the one primary category that best describes what you do, then add only the secondary categories that are true. This is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you appear for.

4. Write a clear description

Say what you do, who you serve and where, in plain words. Mention the towns you work in, such as Carlisle, Mechanicsburg or Harrisburg, if they are true. Skip hype and phone numbers.

5. Add every service you offer

List each service with a short, plain description. Customers search for specific jobs, and listed services help your profile match them.

6. Set accurate hours, including holidays

Wrong hours cost you calls and create bad reviews. Update special hours before every holiday.

7. Add real photos

Add photos of your work, your team, your storefront or truck, and the inside of your space. Use your own photos, not stock images. Add a few new ones each month so the profile stays fresh.

8. Ask for reviews, and answer all of them

  • Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job, with a direct link to your review page.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and short way. Use the customer’s name.
  • Never offer money or gifts for reviews, and never write reviews yourself. It breaks Google’s rules.

9. Use posts, products and Q&A

Share an update, offer or finished project a couple of times a month. Add answers to the questions customers ask you most, so the first answer on your profile is yours.

10. Link to the right page on your website

Point the website button to a page that matches what the customer wants, and make sure the page loads fast on a phone, shows your phone number and makes it easy to call. A profile that sends people to a slow or confusing site wastes the click. Our Carlisle web design and Carlisle SEO services cover this.

Check these every month

  • New reviews answered
  • Hours still correct
  • New photos added
  • Messages and Q&A answered
  • Calls and direction requests, in the profile’s performance tab
