SEO costs depend on your starting point, your competition and how much work you want done. There is no single honest price for “SEO.” Any number quoted without looking at your site, your market and your goals is a guess. This guide explains what moves the price so you can compare quotes fairly.
The three ways SEO is priced
- One-time project: a fixed fee for a defined job, such as an audit, a Google Business Profile cleanup or fixes to your site. It ends when the work ends.
- Monthly retainer: a recurring fee for ongoing work, such as new content, page updates, profile management and reporting. This is the most common model because local rankings need steady attention.
- Hourly or consulting: you pay for advice or training and do the work yourself.
None of these is automatically better. A project suits a clear fix. A retainer suits a business that wants steady growth and does not want to manage it.
What drives the price
Competition
A market with many strong competitors takes more work than one with few. Searching your main service plus your city shows you quickly who you are up against.
The state of your site and profile
A site with broken pages, thin content or a missing Google Business Profile needs cleanup before growth work starts. A healthy site costs less to build on.
Size and number of locations
A ten page site is a smaller job than a site with hundreds of pages. Each additional location adds profile, page and review work.
Content
New pages and articles take writing time. How many you need depends on how many services and areas you want to cover.
Links and mentions
Earning mentions from local sites, directories and partners is slow, manual work. It is a big part of what a retainer pays for.
Reporting and meetings
Some providers send a PDF. Others review the numbers with you every month. Ask which one you are buying.
What you can do for free
Google Business Profile and Google Search Console are free. You can fix a lot yourself with the Google Business Profile checklist and the 5 local SEO tips. The cost of doing it yourself is your time.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What exactly is included each month, in a written list?
- What is not included?
- Who owns the accounts, the content and the website when we stop?
- How will you measure progress, and how often will we review it?
- What is the minimum term, and how do I cancel?
- What results do you expect and in what timeframe, and what could change that?
Google suggests asking providers how they measure success and whether they follow its Search Essentials. See how to choose an SEO company for the full list.
Warning signs on price
- A flat low price with no written scope.
- A guarantee of a first place ranking. Google says no one can guarantee that.
- Pressure to sign before they have looked at your site.
- No clear answer on who owns your accounts.
What SEO costs with Webfactory Media
- Monthly SEO: roughly $1,000 to $10,000 per month, depending on scope. Local SEO for one location and a few service areas sits at the lower end. More locations, more service areas, heavier content and tougher competition move it up.
- Discovery comes first. It is scoped after we talk through your goals. An SEO audit, keyword research, competitor review and a sitemap game plan, so the monthly work is aimed at the right pages.
- Commitment: SEO takes months to show results, so plans typically carry a 3 to 6 month minimum.
These are ranges, not a quote. See our full AI SEO pricing guide, or request a free review and we will scope it.
How we handle pricing
What you should see for the money
Whatever you pay, you should be able to see what was done. A fair provider can show you a list of work each month: pages changed, profile updates, reviews requested, links earned and the numbers that moved. If the monthly report is only a ranking screenshot, ask for more. Rankings alone do not pay the bills. Calls and jobs do.
Is it worth it?
That depends on what a new customer is worth to you and how many you can handle. If one new job pays for a lot of work, the math is easier. If you have no capacity for more jobs, spending on growth does not help yet. Work out your average job value and how many new customers you want per month, then ask any provider how their plan connects to that number. If they cannot connect it, keep looking.
How to compare two quotes
- Put both scopes side by side and list what each one includes.
- Mark anything one quote has that the other does not.
- Check contract length and what happens when you leave.
- Ask both for the same example of a past report.
- Choose the one you understand best, not the one with the longest feature list.
Why cheap SEO can cost more later
Low-priced packages can promise a long list of tasks with no detail. Some of those tasks, like mass directory submissions or bought links, can hurt more than they help. Google specifically warns against link schemes. Cleaning up after bad work takes time and money, and you lose the months it was running. A fair price for a clear, smaller scope is better than a low price for a vague, bigger one.
What to budget for besides the provider
- Your own time for approvals, photos and answering questions
- A website that works well enough to build on, which may need its own fixes
- Review collection, which is free but needs a routine
- Paid tools, only if your provider recommends one and explains why
We do not publish a price list because the scope changes from business to business. We start with a free marketing review, then give you a written scope and price for the work that fits. You can see how we approach it on our SEO services page.
Timing affects value too, so read how long SEO takes before you set a budget. If you are weighing SEO against ads, see SEO vs Google Ads.
